PTA registration: check before you pay
PTA status is the single biggest factor in what a phone is worth in Pakistan, and it is the thing most often glossed over in a listing. A handset that cannot be registered loses cellular service, which turns an expensive phone into a wifi-only device.
What PTA registration actually is
Pakistan operates a device identification system that blocks unregistered handsets from the cellular network. A phone brought in from abroad works on a short grace window and then loses service until its IMEI is registered and the duty paid. This applies to the device, not the SIM, so swapping networks does not help.
Check the IMEI before any money moves
Dial *#06# on the handset to display its IMEI, then check that number against PTA's own service — not a screenshot the seller sends you. Check it yourself, on the actual device, in front of the seller. A dual-SIM phone has two IMEIs and both matter. This one step prevents the most common expensive mistake in Pakistani phone buying.
What "PTA approved" changes about the price
An approved handset and an identical unapproved one are not the same product and should never trade at the same price. The gap is roughly the registration cost plus a discount for the hassle and risk. If a listing is priced like an approved phone but is not, that is either an oversight or the whole point of the listing — ask directly and get the answer in writing in the chat.
Buying used: beyond PTA status
After IMEI, the things that move the price are battery health, whether the screen or board has been replaced, and whether the original box and receipt exist. Repairs are extremely common in this market and are not disqualifying — an honest seller who tells you the screen was changed is worth more than one who lets you find out. Ask, and price accordingly.
