Wedding season: what to buy new, and what not to

Pakistani wedding season concentrates enormous spending into a few months, and prices across furniture, jewellery and event services move with it. A large share of what gets bought is used once, which makes this one of the strongest second-hand markets in the country.

Buy ahead of the season, not into it

Furniture makers, jewellers and event suppliers all price on how full their order book is. Ordering in the quiet months costs less and gets better attention than ordering when every workshop in the city is booked. If your date is in season, placing orders months ahead is the single biggest saving available.

Where second-hand genuinely wins

Bedroom sets, dining tables and sofa suites bought for a wedding are frequently sold on within a couple of years, in excellent condition, for a fraction of what they cost. Solid-wood furniture in particular holds up far better than its resale price suggests. For anyone furnishing a home, the post-wedding resale market is consistently better value than buying new.

Jewellery is priced on gold, not on the shop

Gold jewellery is mostly the metal, plus making charges and the jeweller's margin. When comparing pieces, separate the gold weight and purity from the making charge, because that is where quotes actually differ. On resale, expect to recover the metal value rather than what you paid — making charges rarely come back, which is worth knowing before you buy rather than after.

Hire rather than buy

Tents, lighting, crockery and decor are almost always cheaper to hire than to own for a single event. Where buying does make sense is anything you will genuinely reuse. Book hire early in season — the good suppliers are committed months out, and late booking costs a premium for whatever is left.
