Wheat harvest: buying, renting and checking machinery

The wheat cut compresses an enormous amount of machinery demand into a few weeks. Tractors, threshers and harvesters all price on that calendar, and the difference between buying in season and out of it is substantial.

Buy or rent

A harvester earns its keep only across enough acreage; below that, renting is straightforwardly cheaper and avoids storing and maintaining a machine for eleven months of the year. Tractors are different — they work year-round on tillage, transport and tube-well duty, so ownership makes sense at far smaller scale. Be honest about your acreage before committing capital.

Timing the purchase

Machinery prices climb as the cut approaches and fall once it is over. Buying immediately after harvest, against next season, is consistently cheaper than buying into peak demand — and you get a longer window to inspect and repair before it has to work.

Checking a used tractor

Hours matter less than how the hours were spent. Look for smoke on start-up, listen for knocking under load, check for oil in the coolant and vice versa, and inspect the hydraulics by lifting a real load rather than an empty linkage. Confirm the papers are clear — a tractor still on a lease or with unresolved documentation is a problem you inherit.

Threshers and safety

Threshers cause serious injuries every harvest in Pakistan. Check that guards are present and intact rather than removed for convenience, that belts are in good condition and properly tensioned, and that the feeding arrangement keeps hands well clear. A machine sold with its guards missing should be priced as needing them replaced, because it does.
